Solo Dates in Bangalore: Beyond the Cafes

Most people in Bangalore have 3 modes- work, cafe, home. And for a lot of folks cafe and work are the same (me included).

Solo dates are underrated, and this city, if you let it, is an excellent place for them. There is something about spending intentional time with yourself, in a city, with no agenda and no one to coordinate with. If you just moved to this city or tired of making plans that always get cancelled, here are a list of things you can do alone.

Here are some of the other things you could do. Most of these do not cost a lot.

  1. Cubbon Park. You know this has to be the first on the list. Go lie on the grass, stare at the sky, bring a book or don't. The point is to actually pause from the madness of the city or life to appreciate nature. You can hear birds, see squirrels if you go earlier in the morning. On Sunday mornings, you can rent a cycle, you will see people running, skateboarding, classical dance/singing or a bazillion dogs in the dog park.

  2. Lalbagh: This has a different vibe entirely. Go slow, look at the lake, the trees or the popular flower show if you can catch when it happens. It rewards wandering.

  3. Agara Lake or Sankey Tank for a run or a walk. Agara at sunset post-run is its own thing.

  4. Kasavanahalli lake if you want something quieter. There are more lakes in this city than most people have visited. Worth picking one or make a list, you haven't been to one.

  5. Book shopping on Church Street. Go to Blossoms (there are 3 blossoms) or Bookworm, budget more time than you think, buy something you didn't come for.

  6. People watching from Easy Tiger: Grab a beer sit on the road-facing side, and watch the city. Church Street is the perfect place to do this, because you are on the first floor, there is enough distance to watch the most hustling part of the city on a weekend. You will see amazing fashion, people shooting content, selling fruits, art and a whole lot more.

  7. Malleshwaram for a slow morning: good dosa and meals places, wall art, the kind of neighbourhood that doesn't need an agenda.

  8. Walks in residential streets in HSR, Koramangala, or Indiranagar. Pretty houses, garden walls, the occasional tucked-away park. Doesn't feel like an activity until it is. If you don't have a few favorite houses, you have not explored enough.

  9. KR Puram flower market, early morning. This has its own vibe.

  10. Chickpete: The heart of city's commercial business. Whatever you need, you will find a store here. Clothing, jewellery, utensils, card printing- name it, it exists. If you are a photography enthusiast, this is the color explosion you are not ready for. It can be overwhelming, but is as crazy as it could get. No autos or cars are allowed in the inner lanes, and you will see a lot of hand pulled carts doing the transportation here. Wear good walking shoes and go on weekdays if you can.

  11. Museums: MAP, NGMA, the Government Museum, the HMT Museum, the music museum. Bangalore has more cultural places than it gets credit for and almost none of it is crowded.

  12. A play at Rangashankara. Check their website to know the calendar and book tickets.

  13. Bangalore International Centre (BIC) has a bunch of exhibitions or activities happening through out the year. Check out their instagram for the schedule.

  14. Bettas. Bangalore is surrounded by hills and most people don't use this enough. Uttari Betta (70 km, easy, fort ruins, any season), Savandurga (60 km, hard, one of Asia's largest monoliths), Makalidurga (60 km, moderate-hard, railway trek, fort at the top), Ramadevara Betta in Ramanagara (47 km, easy, also a vulture sanctuary), Antharagange in Kolar (70 km, moderate, boulders and caves). For Skandagiri: check availability before planning. Some of these need prior booking, so do check if it needs a ticket before making a full plan. Bangalore Hikes organises group treks for most of these.

  15. Day trips within 100km: Nandi Hills for sunrise (pre-7am or don't bother), Ramanagara for rock climbing and boulders, Manchanabele Dam if you want water and quiet, Kanakapura if it's the right season. Take a bike or car. Go as early as possible before traffic can catch you.

  16. Pottery, bouldering, swimming. Not "someday." Book it this week. You may or may not become an expert but you will have fun for sure.

  17. Playo for badminton or pickleball with strangers. Works better than it sounds. just pick a slot and your level.

  18. Movies, standup, a sports bar if there's a game on.

  19. Cubbon Reads and HSR Reads: silent reading in a park on a Sunday morning. Sounds niche, is one of the better ways to spend two hours. There are more book clubs in the city as well.

  20. BLR Slack and Flow: slacklining, flow arts, acro yoga. Show up once, see if it's your thing. You can also find workshops on hoola hoop and flow arts.

  21. Run clubs: Stride, Indiranagar Run Club, Adidas Runners. The endorphin-based friendship pipeline is real. You can find more Bangalore based communities here.

  22. Pint of View: brewery discussions on things that you wish were as much fun during school.

  23. The city has a constant stream of events. You can checkout BookMyShow, District or Offlyn. Pick one a month you'd normally scroll past and just go.

All you need is to pick something that interests you and just start. Most of these don't cost a lot of money or need a lot of planning. You don't need a group, a partner, or a perfect Saturday. A solo date is just the decision to do something intentional with your time instead of defaulting to the same three options.

Bangalore is genuinely good at rewarding people who show up. The communities are open, the city has layers most people never get to, and the bettas are right there if you leave early enough. Most people are one decision away from a completely different kind of weekend.

A café is fine. But there's a lot more going on, and most of it is just waiting for someone to actually use it.
